Germany’s Foreign Minister Clarifies Merz’s ‘Humiliation’ Remark Was a ‘Clear Warning to Tehran’

NEW YORK — German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has clarified that Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s controversial remark describing Iran as “humiliating” the United States was intended as “a clear warning to Tehran” not to miscalculate the situation.

Wadephul made the statement during an interview with DW in New York, where he addressed the growing diplomatic fallout over Merz’s comments.

🔴 The Context: A Week of Growing Transatlantic Tensions

The clarification follows a week of escalating war of words between Berlin and Washington. On Monday, Chancellor Merz told students in Marsberg that “an entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards,” criticizing what he perceived as a lack of a clear US exit strategy in the two-month-old Iran war.

Merz elaborated that “the Iranians are obviously very skilled at negotiating — or rather, very skillful at not negotiating, letting the Americans travel to Islamabad and then leave again without any result”. He warned that entering a war without a clear exit plan was a dangerous mistake, referencing the painful US experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq.

US President Donald Trump responded swiftly on his Truth Social platform, accusing Merz of not knowing what he is talking about and claiming that the Chancellor “thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon” — an assertion Merz has never made.

📌 Wadephul’s Rebuttal: Iran is ‘Playing for Time’

In his interview, Wadephul made three key points to cool down the diplomatic firestorm:

  • The Remark was a Warning: Merz’s words were not aimed at criticizing the US, but rather a strategic warning to Tehran.
  • Iran’s Miscalculation: Wadephul accused Tehran of “playing for time and not really negotiating in a way which is necessary”. He warned that Iran is “misunderstanding their position and overplaying their role”.
  • US Strength Remains: “The US has still assembled a lot of military equipment around Iran,” Wadephul noted, implying that the military option remains on the table despite the ceasefire.

“It was addressing the behavior of Iran. They are, as I said, misunderstanding their position and overplaying their role, so this is what the chancellor said.”

🌍 Deeper Divisions on Strategy

Despite the clarification, the incident highlights the widening rift between the US and its European NATO allies regarding the Iran war.

While the White House insists on maintaining “maximum pressure” through an extended naval blockade to force Tehran to surrender its nuclear program, Berlin is increasingly pushing for a diplomatic off-ramp. Merz had previously admitted that Europeans were “not consulted” before the US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.

Merz has argued persistently that the Iranians have proven more resilient than expected and that Washington is bogged down in a war it did not adequately plan to finish. His “humiliation” remark was perceived by allies as a critique of the lack of a consistent US negotiating strategy.
