Khamenei Vows to Protect Iran’s Nuclear and Missile Capabilities: ‘We Will Not Bow to US Pressure’

TEHRAN — Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has issued a defiant pledge to protect the nation’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, declaring that the Islamic Republic will not surrender its strategic capabilities to US pressure.

The statement, reported by Iranian state media, escalates Tehran’s confrontation with Washington, as President Trump threatens a return to “maximum pressure” and the US Navy continues to enforce a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

“We will defend our nuclear and missile capabilities. We will not bow to US pressure.”

☢️ Nuclear ‘Red Line’: Enrichment Not Negotiable

Khamenei’s statement reinforces Iran’s long-standing position that its uranium enrichment program is a sovereign right and not subject to negotiation, effectively rejecting a key US demand.

Key elements of Iran’s nuclear position:

  • 60% enrichment: Iran’s stock of uranium enriched to 60% purity — just one technical step from weapons-grade — has grown to a level sufficient for multiple warheads, based on IAEA estimates prior to the war .
  • Rollback rejected: Tehran has consistently rejected any demand that it reduce its enrichment capacity or eliminate its stockpile, describing such proposals as non-negotiable “red lines” .
  • Weapons program denial: Iran claims its program is entirely peaceful, though Western intelligence agencies have long assessed that Iran conducted coordinated research applicable to nuclear weapons design prior to 2003, and that some activities may have continued.

Khamenei’s statement suggests that even the offering of “limited” suspension of enrichment as a negotiating gambit is off the table, hardening Tehran’s stance as the ceasefire remains fragile and talks stalled .

🚀 Missiles: A ‘Conventional Deterrent’

Iran’s ballistic missile program has been a persistent source of tension with the United States. The IRGC possesses a large arsenal of short and medium-range ballistic missiles, including the:

  • Khorramshahr (range: ~2,000 km)
  • Sejjil (range: ~2,500 km, solid fuel)
  • Haj Qasem (range: ~1,400 km)

These missiles can reach Israel and US bases throughout the region. Khamenei’s vow to “protect” this capability suggests that Iran will not accept restrictions on its missile program as part of any nuclear agreement — a condition that successive US administrations have described as necessary for a “comprehensive deal.”

The Biden administration (2021–2025) attempted to negotiate limits on Iran’s missile program, but Tehran consistently refused, arguing that missiles are a conventional deterrent, not a nuclear delivery system.

🛡️ “Maximum Pressure” vs. “Maximum Resistance”

Khamenei’s declaration comes as President Trump has ordered the military to prepare for an extended naval blockade of Iran, which could last for “months” .

Trump has also threatened to reimpose “crippling sanctions” on Tehran, and a White House official said “the window for diplomacy is closing.”

Meanwhile, the Iranian rial has fallen to record lows, and oil exports have been choked by the blockade — but the regime shows no sign of capitulating.

Khamenei’s “we will not bow” is a message to the Iranian people that the pain of the blockade is a price worth paying for strategic independence — and a message to Trump that Tehran can endure longer than Washington expects.
