ASELSAN Showcases Mass Production Pipeline for LGK Laser Guidance Kit

ANKARA — Turkish defense electronics giant ASELSAN has unveiled the entire production and testing pipeline for its Laser Guidance Kit (LGK) system, demonstrating the country’s capacity to mass-produce precision guidance kits for converting unguided general-purpose bombs into laser-guided smart munitions.

The LGK system, which has seen extensive use by the Turkish Air Force in counter-terrorism operations in northern Iraq and Syria, is a bolt-on guidance kit compatible with Mk-81, Mk-82, Mk-83, and Mk-84 series general-purpose bombs. By using a laser seeker and control fins, the LGK can prosecute moving or stationary targets designated by a laser source from aircraft, UAVs, or ground forces.

The company released a video showing the entire industrial process inside its facilities:

  • Automated mass production (robotic assembly lines churning out seekers and guidance fins)
  • Precision assembly (mating the LGK to inert practice bombs)
  • Large-scale stockpiling (warehouses filled with assembled units waiting to be mated to live warheads)
  • Live-fire testing (footage of an F-16 dropping an LGK-equipped bomb hitting a target vehicle with pinpoint accuracy)

Strategic Significance

The LGK is a key component of Türkiye’s broader strategy to reduce its dependency on foreign precision munitions (such as U.S.-made JDAM kits) for its air force. With an estimated unit cost significantly lower than a JDAM or a full-up cruise missile, the LGK can be deployed in high volumes against non-hardened or moving targets, such as militant technicals, artillery pieces, and infrastructure.

The LGK’s user base includes not only the Turkish Air Force but also several NATO allies and partner nations in the Middle East and Asia. The demonstration of mass-production capability — rather than a single prototype — is an important signal to both current and potential customers that ASELSAN can deliver these systems at scale, even during a period of high demand (e.g., the war in Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East).

The LGK pipeline also shows how ASELSAN is leveraging its strength in precision guidance (originally developed for artillery shells) and adapting it to airborne munitions, keeping its factories running at near-peak capacity while Türkiye expands its own military stockpiles.
