Hezbollah Releases FPV Drone Footage Destroying Israeli Merkava Tank in Lebanon

BEIRUT — Hezbollah’s military media wing has released dramatic footage of a First-Person View (FPV) attack drone successfully striking an Israeli Merkava tank in southern Lebanon, marking the latest high-profile loss for the IDF in the escalating border conflict.

The video, which surfaced on the group’s Telegram channels, shows the drone flying at high speed toward the tank, maneuvering to breach the vehicle’s protective cage, and detonating—causing a large secondary explosion .

The Drone vs. The ‘Cope Cage’

The footage is particularly notable because it documents an FPV drone breaching a “cope cage” — an improvised slat armor structure designed to protect the tank from top-attack munitions like drones.

Since the war in Gaza and Lebanon escalated, the IDF has urgently retrofitted many of its Merkava tanks with these cages over the turret. The video shows the drone scoring a direct top hit, likely targeting a weak point in the netting or cage structure, before the explosion ignites the fuel or ammunition inside.

The wreckage of the Merkava (likely a Mark 4 variant, the most advanced in IDF service) was filmed burning, with secondary explosions rocking the frame—a fate commonly associated with catastrophic ammunition cooking off.

Context of the Attack

The incident reportedly took place during ongoing fierce fighting in the Israeli-declared security zone, a buffer strip the IDF has carved inside Lebanese territory as it tries to push Hezbollah’s Radwan forces north of the Litani River. Hezbollah has stepped up its use of these commercially adapted, explosive-laden drones, turning them into precision ground-attack missiles that are difficult to counter.

The group’s FPV drone tactics appear to mirror those learned from the Ukraine war, where small, cheap drones have proven effective against even the most sophisticated armor. The IDF has struggled to adapt to the low-cost, high-volume nature of this threat, acknowledging there is currently “no magic solution” to stop them.

The Limitations of the Footage and Context

While the footage is dramatic, Hezbollah releases video compilations of hits while rarely disclosing when Israeli air defenses successfully intercept their drones. Conversely, several IDF officials have communicated publicly that the military has no hermetic response to the drone threat.

This attack follows a series of recent drone strikes that have killed several IDF soldiers and wounded dozens, as the ceasefire agreement remains in name only. Israeli air and artillery strikes have continued on Hezbollah positions, and the U.S. continues to press for a longer-term resolution.
