At Least 10 Injured in Shooting at Lake Party Near Oklahoma City
EDMOND, Okla. — At least 10 people were transported to hospitals Sunday night following a shooting at a large gathering of young people near Arcadia Lake, about 13 miles north of Oklahoma City, police said .
Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 9 p.m. local time at the popular recreational spot in Edmond, a suburb of roughly 100,000 residents. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Oklahoma City Police Department and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, responded to the scene .
Victims in ‘Various Conditions’
Edmond Police Department spokesperson Emily Ward confirmed that 10 victims were transported by emergency medical services to hospitals across the Oklahoma City metro area. She described the victims’ conditions as “various,” ranging from minor to critical, though no fatalities have been confirmed .
Hospital officials reported that nine patients were being treated at Integris Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, while three others were at Integris Health Edmond Hospital .
The total number of injured is expected to rise as additional victims may have driven themselves to area hospitals seeking treatment, police said .
Investigation Underway
No suspects were in custody as of late Sunday night. Ward described the gathering as a “large party” attended primarily by what appeared to be young adults. Police were conducting interviews with victims and witnesses across the Oklahoma City metro area throughout the night .
“This is obviously a very terrifying situation and we understand the concern from the public and those involved, and we are working extremely hard to find the suspects,” Ward told reporters .
No Ongoing Threat to Public
Authorities stated there is no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat to the general public. The Edmond Police Department is leading the investigation, with assistance from multiple agencies .
Arcadia Lake, located in eastern Edmond, is a man-made reservoir popular for fishing, boating, picnicking, and camping. The area has been cordoned off as investigators process the scene .
Forty years ago, Edmond was the site of one of the deadliest workplace shootings in U.S. history. On Aug. 20, 1986, postal worker Patrick Sherrill shot 20 co-workers, killing 14, before taking his own life .
