The vessels involved were identified as a Luyang II-class (Type 052D) missile destroyer and a Jiangkai II-class (Type 054A) guided-missile frigate. The Penghu archipelago, located in the Taiwan Strait, is strategically significant as it hosts major Taiwanese naval and air force bases.
Taiwan’s military stated it “closely monitored the formation and responded appropriately using naval and air forces” following the incursion. The Ministry released aerial photographs of the two ships but did not specify their exact coordinates.
